About the Project
The University of Washington Ecological Restoration capstone program, also known as the Restoration Ecology Network, facilitates connection between undergraduate students and a Community Partner who work in collaboration to complete restoration project. This program allows students to design and implement the various stages of a restoration project from planning and design to installation and monitoring. Our team is working with Rob Stevens as our Community Partner, and we have adopted a 0.4 acre restoration site in the South Meadow of Discovery Park which we have lovingly named Lizard Haven, due to the presence of native Northern Alligator Lizards on the site!
The Discovery Park team is fueled by a passion for restoration work, and have diverse qualifications that they can apply to this hands-on field experience. The team members are pursuing majors within the fields of Environmental Science or Plant Biology at the University of Washington, which has prepared them to be effective and knowledgeable in this project. The team is composed of individuals with a wide variety of backgrounds and intersectionality, enhancing their ability to employ unique and innovative solutions in their restoration efforts. We are Arianna Fardad, Ellise Hall, Olivia Anderson, Ava Jeanne Gutheil, and Nova Ravenscroft. The restoration site is currently dominated by Himalayan Blackberry and was mowed in late December 2023 to make removal easier for our team and volunteers.
Work parties for our site will be posted here as well on Green Seattle Partnership's website beginning in January and continuing until late Spring of 2024. We can’t wait to see the transformation of our site and to work with volunteers!
